Beyond Teaching Methods: Learner Individuality and Learning Pace in Secondary English Classrooms in Bangladesh (Mixed-Method Study)

by Md. Abu Bakkar (Author)

Abstract: Teaching methods have long been treated as the primary determinant of learning outcomes in English language teaching (ELT). This study examines how learner individuality and learning pace relate to English language achievement and task-based performance among secondary students in Bangladesh, a context in which classroom instruction typically blends communicative and grammar-translation elements rather than implementing either in isolation. The study adopted a convergent mixed-methods design involving 120 students from Grades 8-10 (40 per grade; class sizes ranging from 35 to 45) in one government-regulated secondary school. Quantitative data were collected through a general pre-test and post-test of English achievement and through a speaking task and a translation task completed by all participating students. Qualitative data were gathered through classroom observations, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews. Paired-samples t-tests showed statistically significant improvement in post-test scores across all three grades (all p < .001); the associated effect sizes (Cohen's dz) were unusually large because individual gain scores varied little around a consistent mean improvement of approximately 19 points, a pattern that is explained in full, together with the underlying formulas, software, and robustness checks. Across all grades, translation-task scores were consistently higher than speaking-task scores by an equally consistent margin; because these two tasks assess different language constructs (accuracy-focused written translation versus spontaneous oral communicative production) using different scoring criteria, and because class-level instructional-method membership was not retained as an analytic variable, this pattern is interpreted as a difference between task types rather than as evidence that one instructional method is more effective than another. Qualitative analysis identified four interrelated themes: learner motivation, confidence, and willingness to participate; learning pace and classroom constraints; the influence of examination orientation on learning behaviour; and the differential benefits that communicative and grammar-focused activities offered to different learners. Together, the findings suggest that instructional activities function as supportive tools whose relationship with learning outcomes is shaped by learner individuality, learning pace, and assessment orientation, rather than as an overriding determinant of outcomes in itself. Implications include a need for post-method, principled-eclectic pedagogy, differentiated instruction, more balanced assessment, and teacher training to support diverse learners in examination-oriented contexts such as Bangladesh. Given the single-school context, the absence of a class-level instructional-group comparison, and the short intervention period, the findings should be interpreted as context-sensitive and descriptive rather than as a causal or generalisable comparison of teaching-method effectiveness.

The Demonic Civilization: A Satirical Novel of Democracy, Power, and Illusion

Democracy was supposed to save humanity. Instead, it became a spectacle.

When Demos—the ancient angel of democracy—looks upon the modern world, he finds himself confronting an uncomfortable question: what if the civilization that claims to embody freedom, justice, and human progress has become something else entirely?

Through the journey of Cornelius Bright, an idealistic government analyst in the fictional superpower of Libertania, ''The Demonic Civilization'' dissects the institutions that define contemporary society: elections, media conglomerates, social platforms, think tanks, international organizations, military alliances, and the machinery of global influence.

With razor-sharp satire and philosophical depth, the novel exposes the contradictions of a world where citizens are informed yet misled, connected yet divided, free yet increasingly controlled by systems they neither understand nor influence.

Part political allegory, part dark comedy, and part philosophical inquiry, ''The Demonic Civilization'' challenges readers to reconsider the stories that modern societies tell about themselves.

A provocative novel for readers who enjoy ideas as much as stories—and who are willing to question both.

The Fierce Mountain: Afghan Nation’s Long March Through Blood, Fire, and Freedom

An empire came with tanks. A people answered with faith.

December 1979. The Soviet Union sends its Fortieth Army across the ancient Oxus River and into Afghanistan, expecting a swift and bloodless victory over what its generals dismiss as primitive mountain tribesmen. What it encounters instead is a nation of souls who have spent three thousand years teaching empires the same lesson — and who are ready to teach it again.

THE FIERCE MOUNTAIN is an epic historical novel set across the full nine years of the Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989). At its heart stands Tariq Khan, a young Pashtun from the Kunar Valley whose quiet faith and unshakeable dignity make him as dangerous to the Soviet occupation as any weapon. Beside him stand his fierce poet-friend Yusuf, the wise old historian Haji Ibrahim whose stories of Saladin and the Ottoman sultans sustain the fighters through the hardest winters, and Commander Hamza Gul — a brilliant tactician who insists on mercy even in the darkest hours of war.

But the mountains hold other stories too.

Katerina Volkov is a Ukrainian linguist blackmailed by the KGB into serving as a spy in Kabul — her brother held hostage to ensure her cooperation. Fluent in Dari and Pashto, schooled in her father’s love for Afghan poetry, she is sent to seduce and recruit the very people she cannot help but admire. When she meets Tariq in a village courtyard and discovers that he reads the same poets she has carried in her bag since childhood, something in her world begins to shift — and the woman sent to destroy begins the long, costly journey toward becoming someone she is not ashamed of.

Meanwhile, Cold War shadows lengthen across the conflict. RAW intelligence officer Major Rajesh Bhatt arrives in Kabul with satellite-precise information on mujahideen supply routes. The Soviets rain destruction on villages, prisons fill with the innocent, and the mountains absorb the cost in blood. But the mountains also give back what empires can never take: the unbreakable human will to remain.

Spanning nine years of unequal, brutal, magnificent resistance, this novel weaves together the poetry of Khushal Khan Khattak and Rahman Baba, the history of Saladin and Suleiman the Magnificent, the love of a people for their land, and the unexpected mercy that flowers even in the hardest soil — to tell the story of one of the most important and least-remembered conflicts of the twentieth century.

“The coffins are coming home, and the mothers weep. But nobody asked the Afghan mothers how many of their sons they have buried.” — Svetlana Alexievich, Zinky Boys

A sweeping, deeply human story of war, faith, resistance, and the courage it takes to choose mercy when hatred would be so much easier.

Humanimal Demon: A Dark Allegory of Power, War, and Civilization

The Humanimal Demon is a haunting political allegory that exposes the machinery of power, war, and human complicity. In a world where empires claim morality but thrive on suffering, one narrator’s journey reveals the truth behind the headlines, treaties, and speeches that shape civilization.

From the first announcement of “humanitarian intervention” to the collapse of illusions that hide systemic cruelty, the story immerses readers in a world where war is a market, media is a filter, and diplomacy masks exploitation. As the narrator meets refugees, whistleblowers, archivists, and profiteers, patterns emerge—patterns that have repeated throughout history and continue to persist in the present.

  • The Shadow: The visible consequences of empire—ghost cities, displaced populations, and the cost of ambition.
  • The Revelation: The emergence of hidden truths and the dangerous reality for those who seek them.
  • The Mirror: Humanity confronts its own role in perpetuating systemic evil—the Humanimal Demon that resides within civilization itself.

Through vivid characters like Cassian Rook, the war profiteer; Tomas Vale, the archivist who uncovers the patterns of history; and Ishar, the refugee whose voice challenges official narratives, the book portrays both individual and collective responsibility.

Themes of ambition, greed, fear, nationalism, and moral complicity are woven into a story that is as unsettling as it is illuminating. Readers are challenged to question what they are told, recognize the machinery behind headlines, and confront the uncomfortable truth: the demon is not hidden in darkness—it speaks from podiums, councils, and media broadcasts every day.

Dark, incisive, and deeply reflective, The Humanimal Demon is more than a story. It is a mirror held up to society, asking: what patterns do we allow to survive, and what choices define us as a civilization?

Perfect for fans of:
    • Dark political allegories
    • Social and historical commentary
    • Thought-provoking dystopian fiction
    • Readers who question power, media, and societal structures

“The Demon was never hiding in the darkness. It had been speaking at podiums the entire time. The Demon survives not because it is powerful, but because the world has learned to call it civilized.

Prepare to see the world—and humanity itself—through a new, unsettling lens.
